On yesterdays basketball brawl in Cincinnati

Strong words from the head coach of University of Cincinnati Basketball, Mick Cronin.

If my players don’t act the right way, they will never play another game at Cincinatti. Right now, I just told my guys, I’ll meet with my AD, and meet with my President, and I’m going to decide who is on the team going forward…I made everyone take their jersey off and they will not put it on again until they have a full understanding of where they go to school and what the University stands for and how lucky they are to be there—let alone have a scholarship, because there are a whole lot of kids who can’t pay for college.

And from Xavier star guard, Tu Holloway (but what would you expect from a 20-year-old).

That’s what you’re going to see from Xavier and Cincinnati. We got disrespected a little bit before the game, guys calling us out. We’re a tougher team. We’re grown men over here. We’ve got a whole bunch of gangsters in the locker room—not thugs, but tough guys on the court.

I’ve watched the highlights of this game multiple times, and I have absolutely no connection to either school, but this game really got to me. There were a lot of players on both teams that were trying to break up the fight. There were many players who did not throw a punch and did not act like thugs.

To scholarship athletes, who are on national television on a Saturday afternoon, don’t start fights because someone called you out on Twitter. You are not gangsters. And you are not grown men. I really hope some of these players lose their scholarships.
