The first game that I decided to watch since the Super Bowl was the Celtics overtime loss to the Lakers last night. Still depressed.

Only doing this in February. Keeping it short and hoping the days get longer.
February 7, 2012
So what if my dinner tonight was pretzel m&m’s and a banana? Decisions for dinner are tough at 10pm.

Day 1 of no sports shows, radio, articles, or talk. Not entirely successful but I have found many excel spreadsheets to occupy my mind.

Devastated. The sequel.
SUPER BOWL Weekend -- the most dangerous 72 hours
The four hours of the game, which is more like six hours of football—an hour before and possibly more than an hour after the game—will be the most dangerous part of the weekend because it is going to be so stressful to watch the Patriots play the Giants again. I am not lying, I could not watch sports, go onto the internet, or pick up a newspaper for weeks after February 3, 2008. Any...

What a great morning to run 17 miles. Last 4 miles: 9:05, 9:28, 9:00, 9:55. A lot of work left to do.
February 3, 2012
Stretch now. Ice later. 8 Advil today.
February 2, 2012
Felt great on an 8.8 mile run even though I had a burrito for lunch. BOOM!

Shorts and a t-shirt for tonight’s run. Where you at winter?
Training day
I cross-trained the hell out of my work out tonight. This year I feel like I can get to the gym more, stretch, and balance my work-run-work-run-work out and lifting schedule.
Today’s a training day, Officer Hoyt. Show you around, give you a taste of the business. I got 38 cases pending trial, 63 in active investigations, another 250 on the log I can’t clear. I supervise five...

Everyone:
Here is my time, as a savvy veteran, to weigh in, and tell you all to take a deep breath. I sense a bit of anxiety building up over the last 2 weeks. Today...
Do you know this runner?
Runner #1: Wearing Adidas. Black pants. Black jacket. Listening to an iPod. Running on the sidewalk of a busy street. At night. Comes up to an intersection with either the assumption that cars have an automatic sensor that detects any jogger within 10 feet and alerts the driver, but, fails to realize that maybe not all cars—just the expensive new cars—are equipped with such a device...
Marathon training will feel real this week
Track work out Tuesday night. Crossroads Thursday night. 16 mile run Saturday. When this is all done, and when I can take a nap that Saturday afternoon, it will be my first week over 30 miles since the end of September.
I remember that this happens from January through April so I’m not worried about it. I just need to remind myself to stretch and cross-train over the next 12 weeks. Exactly...
Framingham High School teacher's in the news
This weekend I found out, well after watching the coverage of the 2012 US Olypmic Marathon Trials, that a math teacher from my high school qualified for the Marathon in Houston.
It has been 8 years since my days at Framingham High, but glad to see my hometown represented in Houston.
Here’s a recent interview with Jodie Conway.
Inspiring stories... (part 2)
I am continuing the reblog of Hilary’s cancer journey…
Monday (01.08.96)
The Morning
It was early Monday. My teachers, friends, and even my little brother were boarding buses and getting into cars to head into school. Our neighbors warmed up their cars before embarking on their chilly Monday-morning commute. The big news story from the weekend was a huge blizzard that paralyzed the...
Inspiring stories...
I say this every year, and I know it’s true…I am so lucky to run with an incredible group of people. Each runner brings a unique experience. Each runner has an inspiring story. And each Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge runner is doing some amazing work. Here’s part 1 of Hilary Hall’s ‘Why I Run’ story.

Exactly 16 years ago at this time, I sat in a...
Secrets to a sub 4-hour marathon
“Hey, Eric, how do I get mentioned in your top 10 runs of 2012?”
“Help me run a sub 4-hour marathon.”
So Mike Doherty and I discussed various strategies to run a 3:40 - 3:50 marathon which is what I’m aiming for—actually, 3:45 once I get serious about this. Once he started adding tempo runs to his training he was able to cut his PR from 4:10 to 3:36. And this...

1,026 miles
With probably one run left for me in 2011—judging by how slow my body is recovering from a couple hours of tennis yesterday—I think I will be able to pass 1,031 miles in 2011. I’m tired.
I got the most out of the miles I ran in 2011, but I expect I may even be able to get to 1,100 or 1,200 miles in 2012. And not because I’m going to run three marathons instead of two. In...
Quotes from my grandparents
It’s a good thing I love my family.
She told me that she was there for her friend who was a prostitute.
…Sometimes some words get mixed up.
I’ll teach you about preferred stocks if you teach me Facebook.
…How many octogenarians do you know on Facebook?
Your priorities tomorrow are 1. tennis clinic 2. meeting up with that girl and 3. dinner with us.
…Family...
My top 5 favorite runs of 2011
In the past I have done this post as a top 10 list, but this year, there was not much to separate what would be those runs 6 - 10. I have even left off my two marathons—Boston and MDI—from this list, not because they were not important, but because I have talked about those runs more than enough. Here are my top 5, in order, from 2011.
5. 21 Miles - 2/20/11 - DFMC Group Run: This was...
The Tosh.O marathon. Looks a lot more fun than the Newton hills.
On yesterdays basketball brawl in Cincinnati
Strong words from the head coach of University of Cincinnati Basketball, Mick Cronin.
If my players don’t act the right way, they will never play another game at Cincinatti. Right now, I just told my guys, I’ll meet with my AD, and meet with my President, and I’m going to decide who is on the team going forward…I made everyone take their jersey off and they will not put...

One in 16,000
This year there will be 16,000 new patients treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
My sister will be one of them.
Just over a month ago, Blair had an aggressive tumor removed from her ovary. A few days after this initial shock, we were fortunate to learn that the cancer was caught early. A CT scan showed no signs that the cancer had spread, and we were told that Blair’s cancer can be treated...

I'm fundraising for the first time this winter...
To reply to @Motivateyourass:
I’m fundraising for the first time this winter-any tips that have worked for you?
What are you raising money for? Make sure you connect your cause to your donors. They will likely be asked by a lot of people so make them/their money/ and what they can do to help you very import—and understandable.
Write thank-you notes and send them to your...
Excited to be a part of something BIG, heck,...
This was posted today on the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge runner’s bulletin board. We’ve got a long way to go, but I know we will be there some day. Great words, Chris.
I just want to say how excited I am to be a part of this. I spend most of my time on my job and family, it is a very different experience for me to be working towards something bigger. Bigger than myself and bigger...

Finisher's medal, bib numbers, or race shirt?
I have about 14 race medals hanging in my room, some old race bib numbers just lying around, and so many race shirts I can’t even keep them all at my apartment. So far, more than all those things that are given out at races, my favorite memorabilia item from any race is a NO STOPPING sign. It’s one of the classic ones. Collected this one just before the 2010 Boston Marathon. It will be...

Road Race Popularity Reaches an All-Time...
And other headlines you could expect to see about the New York City Half Marathon $128 entry fee. Not doing that one. I will run a NYRR half in 2012, but most likely the Brooklyn or Queens.
This is right about the time that a lot of people begin training for the Boston Marathon. So who will I be following on Tumblr this winter?
This year I’m considering increasing my fundraising goal from...

Study spurs new progress on AIDS vaccines
Efforts to prevent AIDS have been hampered by a biological roadblock: the failure of experimental vaccines to spur the production of effective antibodies against HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS in humans.
When HIV-1 enters the body, it mutates rapidly. In just one week, it evolves more in a single individual than the influenza A virus does in an entire year all over the world. The immune system...

The Victoria Secret fashion show last night was awesome. Hands down (and not in my pants) the best hour of television I have seen in a while. Is Love Pink a VS brand? Was Maroon 5 really boring? Was John Mayer at the show?
I thought to myself, what do they have to do to get in shape? And then I found this NY Mag article (via @SarahFit), which talks about Adriana Lima getting fit with boxing, jump...

Building my playlists
The songs, artists, and beats have been mostly the same for a long time. My running playlists evolved from Kweli, Mos Def, Mase, Notorious to Lil Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye, Jay Z. Sometimes I’ll switch up the music and listen to Kings of Leon, Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers. But, if I want to ball hard on my run, and I need the extra boost from the beats, than...

Running buddy relationship updates
This will make Caitie vomit.
Me: post on the DFMC bulletin board - “Age 24 & living in Cambridge…looking for runner partner!”
do you think I should?
J: oooooohhhh!
I will accept a one year affair
Me: thanks, do we need to compare lists?
J: i don’t want to know details, and when I come back I’ll probably be coy but secretly really want a threesome

How can we make this the best DFMC year ever?
There is something incredibly unique, and overly uplifting, and damn important about each runner who is part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. They have become my facebook motivation and support group, my run - then drink - then run some more buddies, my personal lifts to group runs, and my really good friends. I know soon enough this team will, as I expect, have grown to 2nd generation...
